Tracking of your income tax refund

The Income Tax department has started sending out letters on refunds to taxpayers. If you have paid an extra tax, and also filed returns online and wondering what happened to your returns, you can simply check for the status online or via phone.

The processing time for tax refund is not standardized – it could be processed in just 20 days or, in some case, it may even take up to two years. So if you are waiting for your tax refund we are here with three different ways to know status of your income tax refund.

(1) Online Tracking of Income Tax Refund:-

Most simple & convenient method to track income tax refund is online on website of income-tax department (here) or National Securities Depository (here).

5 Websites for Filing Income Tax Return

Once you open this website it will ask for PAN number and Assessment year.

Enter your PAN number and select Assessment year 2012-2013 for this year refund.

Once you press submit button it will display status of your refund.

Refund Status

You will able to see status message like.

If your Refund is not processed:-

(1)   Your assessing officer has not sent this refund to Refund Banker.

(2)   If this refund has been sent by your Assessing Officer within the last week, you may wait for a week and again check status.

If your Refund is processed & credited in bank account:-

(1)   Refund is already credited to your bank, please contact your bank.

You will receive this status only if during submission of IT return if you have selected option to directly credit refund in your account & submitted your bank details.

If you haven’t mentioned the bank details, you would get a paper cheque for the refund amount at the address mentioned by you on the form.

If for some reason you have a query about the refund, you can get in touch with the Aaykar Sampark Kendra at this email at refunds@incometaxindia.gov.in.

The IT department has a Centralized Processing Centre in Banglore, where the processing of income tax returns happen and refund, if applicable, are transmitted to refund bankers. As it is centralized process is faster for settlement of refunds.

(2) Phone call:-

The State Bank of India (SBI) is the refund banker to the Income Tax Department (ITD). The Cash Management Product department of SBI (CMP SBI) processes the refunds under the refund banker scheme.

So, if you are not able to get the information about the refund status online, you can simply call SBI’s toll free number, 1-800-4259760, to check for the status. You can also sent email on itro@sbi.co.in

(3) Personal Visit:

Alternatively, you could also visit your local tax office for the refund.
